After graduating from Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai in 1990, I did my Masters in General Surgery (MS) at Coimbatore Medical College in 1993. I subsequently did my super-specialist training (MCh) in Pediatric Surgery at MMC (Institute of Child Health & Hospital for Children) in 1999. Since 2000, I am working at the Institute of Child Health & Hospital for Children as Senior Asst Prof in the Department of Pediatric surgery.
Pediatric Surgery is a Specialist surgery performed only by highly trained professionals. It brings more challenges to this art of surgery as this is performed between 2 months and 10 years of age. The metabolic and coping capability of patients in this age group are very limited due to Lesser blood volume (80 to 100 ml/kg) smaller tissue volume, and smaller and thinner tissue structures. Hence the surgery itself is very delicate one and needs two years of rigorous training in pediatric surgery field.
Over the last 14 years, I had been fortunate enough to treat almost all paediatric surgical conditions. I have so far done more than 12,000 surgeries in pediatric surgery and its sub specialities, in that 4,000 cases of pedidatric Urology, 3.000 cases of Pediatric Gastroentology, 2,500 Pediatric General Surgery, namely (Hernia, Hydrocele and Phimosis), 1,500 surgerical new born cases (Neonatal surgeries), 500 Pediatric thoracic cases, 500 Pediatric Oncology cases, 500 pediatric plastic surgery cases (Cleft Lip and Palate). |
